The Castle

Because one’s house isn’t just a house, it’s one’s home, one’s castle…

thecastle2.jpg

The castle is the story of the youngest Kerrigan son, whom we’ll nearly never see for the duration of the movie, but who is the orator.

If Australia or rather Australians had to be depicted by one « cliche movie » you couldn’t pick any other than « the castle ». And every cliche, it is based on truth, and often hilarious.

So the castle tell us the story of this Ozzi familly whom house is to be bought (for a ridiculous amount of money) by the neighbours who want extend their garden, the neighours being Melbourne’s airport, our Kerrigan mob is in a bit of trouble to hold on their house, sorry, their castle.

But the plot is actually not the key to the movie, what is more important is the characters and their answers to the issues of life. Their passions, their good mood, their principles, and above all their obliviousness to the real world, to the distress of every non-Kerrigan character.

But that’s where it works, that is how the castle has become one of my favorite comedies, because it’s contagious, their naive way of fighting against the governement, their belief that right is right and wrong will fail is beautiful and, of course hilarious…

So by following this familly we will see the deep Australia, not the aboriginal one, nor the outback, or the bush, but the Mr Everybody, or at least an australian being that would have all the features, qualities, and australianess of a hundred others united in one.

But all is not perfect in the world of the Kerrigans, and that gives the movie bit of a serious note that is, in my view, nothing but a take the piss, to make this familly more believable. Be reassured, you won’t drop a tear watching this picture.

And it works, because if, in more than one year in Australia I still haven’t met any of the Kerigans, I have met enough persons reminding me of them to make them more than just a cliche, but a australian dream (kind of).

To conclude, just so you really want to see this master piece of cinema, here is a picture of the whole familly and friends :

And, now that you are wondering why this picture should convince you to buy this DVD, I’ll tell you a secret that you won’t believe until you double check on imdb.com : no, this film is not from the eighties, but from the end of the nineties, and that’s when the story is happening too.

So, get a good sense of Ozzi hospitality, watch the castle.

c’est bourré de vitamines…mais ça a un gout de chiotte….sinon t’as oublié Muriel a.k.a. Mariel a.k.a. « there was something in the air that night, the stars were bright, Fernando !!! »
